A landmark two-part theatrical event at Crow’s Theatre
Crow’s Theatre’s 2026–27 season will feature the return of Fall on Your Knees, presented as an expansive two-part theatrical event in co-production with Vita Brevis Arts. Adapted from Ann-Marie MacDonald’s celebrated novel, the production continues its life following a widely acclaimed Canadian premiere and national tour, reaffirming its place as one of the most ambitious works in recent Canadian theatre.
Set in early 20th-century Cape Breton and beyond, Fall on Your Knees follows the Piper family through a complex legacy shaped by love, secrecy, music, and identity. The story unfolds across time and place, moving from a small coastal community to larger cultural centres, tracing the emotional and psychological inheritance passed from one generation to the next. Music, memory, and buried truths are central forces in a narrative that gradually reveals the depth of its characters and the consequences of long-held silence. Presented in two parts, the structure allows the full scope of the novel to be realized on stage, giving space for both intimate character moments and the broader arc of a family history that spans decades.
The 2027 run builds on the success of the work’s original stage premiere in 2023, a major Canadian co-production developed over more than a decade. That initial production toured across Toronto, London, Ottawa, and Halifax through a national partnership between the National Arts Centre, Canadian Stage, Neptune Theatre, Grand Theatre, and Vita Brevis Arts. It marked the world premiere of the stage adaptation, bringing a defining Canadian novel to the stage with an ambition that matched its scope. The response to the tour confirmed both the artistic strength of the adaptation and a clear audience appetite for a work of this scale, establishing Fall on Your Knees as a significant contemporary theatrical achievement.
The continued collaboration between Crow’s Theatre and Vita Brevis Arts reflects a shared commitment to large-scale, artistically driven work. Within the 2026–27 season, Fall on Your Knees stands as a centerpiece production, shaped by this partnership and by a creative vision that supports ambitious literary adaptation for the stage. By presenting the work in two parts, the production invites audiences into a deeper engagement with the material, offering a rare opportunity to experience a story that unfolds gradually, revealing its full emotional weight over time.
Fall on Your Knees will be presented in repertory at Crow’s Theatre, allowing audiences to experience both parts of the story within the same run, with Part 1 scheduled from February 9 to March 21, 2027, and Part 2 running from February 12 to March 21, 2027. This format provides flexibility for viewing while maintaining the integrity of the complete narrative.
Few Canadian novels have had the enduring cultural impact of Fall on Your Knees. Its return in this new staging reflects not only the strength of the original work, but the success of its theatrical adaptation and the continued collaboration between producing partners committed to bringing it to the stage. As part of the 2026–27 season, the production offers an immersive and expansive theatrical experience designed to resonate long after its final moment.
